Berry Pinshow was born in South Africa and came to Israel on his own in January 1962. His parents followed soon after. Berry attended Alliance Francaise High School in Ramat Aviv after which he worked for the Society for Protection of Nature in Israel at the new field school in Eilat until his conscription in January 1966. He then served in a "Nahal garin" to Kibbutz Eilot for three years. Berry obtained his BSc in Biology at Tel Aviv University, and his PhD in Zoology at Duke University in North Carolina. He married Hana, née Pertzov in 1972. Berry studied Emperor Penguin Physiology at McMurdo Station for his PhD, and Hana, who worked as his technician, was the first Israeli woman to set foot on the Antarctic continent. After a post-doctoral stint in biophysical ecology at UW Madison, Berry joined the faculty of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, where he worked at the Jacob Blaustein Institutes for Desert Research at Midreshet Ben Gurion for 38 years. He retired as Prof. Emeritus, in 2015. Berry still does a little research and teaches biophysical field methods annually. Hana and Berry have three children who grew up at Midreshet Ben-Gurion and all reside in Israel with their children.
