How the ladies of Modiin spent a night on the tiles

Your move . . . Playing Mah Jongg in Modiin

On Monday, May 13, Modiin MahJ Mavens hosted their very first MahJ-a-Thon. The group came into being nine months ago when ESRA Modiin sponsored Mah Jongg lessons. Eight women learned Mah Jongg together, under the expert eye and hand of Debbie Forman, and they quickly became enamored with the excitement of the game. Since that time, MMM has had weekly games, sometimes twice a week, and everyone has advanced from beginner to skilled player. Each player donates NIS 5 per evening, the proceeds of which benefit ESRA Modiin's project in the city, Neve ESRA, an afternoon center for kids at risk. So far, over NIS1200 has been donated.

Concentrating hard on a game of Mah Jongg

Wanting to share their love of the game, Modiin MahJ Mavens organized a tournament under the auspices of ESRA. The MahJ-a-Thon attracted players from all over Israel: Jerusalem, Herzliya, Netanya, Kfar Saba and Rehovot. The largest turnout naturally came from Modiin, where the Mavens met seasoned enthusiasts who were, unbeknownst to them, neighbors of theirs. Nineteen players attended the MahJ-a-Thon and played a total of nine hands of Mah Jongg. Scores were tallied and the proud winners were: Cynthia Barmor, Sylvia Cramer and Hillary Gordon. These lucky winners won beautiful gifts, handmade by Ethiopian women. The biggest prize of all, however, was the joy of sharing the love of this ancient Chinese game with new friends from different places, levels of skill and walks of life.

Modiin MahJ Mavens plan to continue to sponsor unique programming and are looking forward to screening the documentary "Mah Jongg: The Tiles that Bind", a cultural phenomenon among Jewish - American women. The movie will be shown at a special benefit evening in October 2013 - watch for announcements after the summer - and will include the movie, Mah Jongg games, and as in the tournament, laughs and excitement.

Would you like to join in the fun? Can we arouse your interest in learning this ancient Chinese game? Modiin Mahj Mavens will be pleased to welcome you.! And with a little bit of skill and luck, there will be more MahJ-Mavens-in-the-Making!
